THIS HOLY MYSTERY: a mosaic understanding of communion

by artist Amelia (Maple) Swan McGhee

“This Holy Mystery” is a phrase in our communion liturgy words of response,

“Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us.”

This sacrament has been called by many different names…

Mass- A Sending, a mission

Eucharist- a gift of thanks

Communion- a coming into community

Divine Liturgy- a sacred invitation to grace

The Lord’s Supper- gathering at the table for a meal

This holy mystery-

One of the mornings this week I went down to drop off and one of the preschooler called out “PASTOR JEWELL LOOK!

And he held up a kaleidoscope for me to look through-

That what this holy mystery is-

We turn all of these beautiful names over and over and put our eyes up to the hole and look to the light, each turn a new picture, and beautiful collision, a small piece of what might be seen.

This holy kaleidoscope, this mystery-

And always, always, an invitation.

Holy Artist and Mystery maker- God who reveals and conceals at the same time.

We ask that you will send us out in the strength of your Spirit

That you will send us out, heavy with thanks, pockets full like a kid collecting rocks, thanks to give.

Nourished by your love and by your grace.

Amen.
